“Roots of Hope” Attracts a Crowd

The “Roots of Hope” Exhibit Opening Reception was a grand success with over 75 guests. This unique current exhibit features artwork by the inmates at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka. Troy University offers them a gardening/art program. As the head gardener said at the reception, “I garden; Kelly arts.” Kelly is Dr. Kelly Berwager, one of The Kelly Art Associates.

Kelly Berwager finds her work with the prisoners very touching and was pleased that their art truly shows the seeds of hope for their future. They’ve told her that they feel they’re learning skills they can eventually share with their families and that the time together in the garden or doing art is very helpful psychologically. One of the women said the following:

Many other stories and comments are posted along with the art. Take a few minutes to come in and read these heartfelt messages.

Any sales/proceeds from the art will go to Troy’s program, and they gratefully accept donations to help pay for their needed supplies. The exhibit is open through April 30, after which will come the high school students’ exhibit.
