Watercolor Methodology: Red Cardinal

Taught by Tim Thomas, this watercolor methodology class centers on painting a red bird—most often a cardinal—as a study in color layering, perception, and visual sequencing. This class challenges students to shift how they see color by learning to identify colors as layered relationships rather than single values, and by painting the first color they perceive last. Through transparent watercolor glazing, students build complex reds and surrounding hues that evolve as successive layers are applied—much like stacking panes of glass, where each layer subtly alters the colors beneath it.
