Chillin’ with Charlie

Three carloads of eager Kelly members, led by Cookie Knott, traveled to Selma to enjoy the vibes of Charlie Lucas’ crazy studio. Charlie’s called “The Tin Man” for a clear reason. He has a huge old warehouse chock full of junk (designer junque?) Everything from hubcaps to broken bicycles, pieces of wood, yarn, nuts, bolts, spools were everywhere. From this colossal mess, he creates absolutely fascinating art like the nine pieces he’s loaned to The Kelly with the current Sawdust and Rust exhibit. He claims he finishes one piece every day and that each piece has a story. He also hosts summer camps for children, encouraging them to express themselves using these castaway materials. It’s hard to describe everything, so the pictures will be the 1000s of words here:
