"Art in the Modern Era: Historical perspective, making sense of AI, and artists’ place in modern society."

Dr. Steve Barrington

With lifetime roots in Alabama, and a deeply connected residence in Montgomery for over three decades, Steve Barrington is an artist that loves the South. His artistic pursuits have included drawing, pastel, watercolor, oil painting, and currently, mixtures of those media.

His subjects are flavored by his passions: figurative work, shaped by his orthopedic surgery training and career; landscapes, shaped by his love of hunting and God’s beautiful creation; portrait work, celebrating relationships and individual beauty.

Drawing from many different techniques and influences, his work is impressionistic, realistic, abstract, and sometimes experimental. His work explores beauty in the mundane, color in the subtlety of the drab, and abstract shapes of light and shadow. His goal is to share his personal perspective, and engage the viewer in a personal and emotional way.

Alisa Beck

Alisa Beck is a native of Alabama and a dedicated studio artist and adult art teacher based in Montgomery, Alabama who transforms oil paints with an innovative toolkit—brayers, palette knives, and squeegees—to create large, gestural compositions marked by bold strokes and vibrant color. Influenced by the expressive power of Turner and the abstract language of Rothko, her work uniquely blends abstraction with imagined realism and subtle romantic undertones, capturing the dynamic interplay of color, texture, movement, and light. A Huntingdon College BFA graduate (1994), Alisa’s artistic journey spans diverse media—from early work in sculpture, architectural drafting, and digital embroidery to crafting jewelry—each experience enriching her signature painting practice. As a passionate educator and mentor, she has shared her expertise across the Southeast through workshops, inspiring emerging artists and continuously evolving her own creative process. Her career is also highlighted by solo exhibitions, collaborative shows, and an impactful role in community art initiatives that have solidified her presence in the local art scene. Today, Alisa’s studio serves as a vibrant hub for teaching and creative exploration, where she relentlessly pushes the boundaries of her craft while drawing inspiration from the profound experiences of her southern surroundings.
